DISCLAIMER– I am not a veterinarian, but this diet was approved by our vet. This is the recipe I use, and I thought it would be nice to share in case you are looking for one or want to try it out. I created a print out which is located towards the bottom of the page if you would like to print and take it to your vet to get the recipe approved for your pet.
Homemade Dog Food
We have a 3 year old miniature schnauzer, Crew, who struggles with allergies. Our vet recommended we try out a homemade dog food diet to see if it would help clear up his allergies and itchiness.
The recipe is located down below.
I began searching online for a recipe. There were so many options, and it quickly became overwhelming. I eventually settled on this one, and our vet approved it. It is very quick and easy to make, and I usually cook it in bulk and freeze it. It costs me roughly $5 to make 2 weeks worth of food, and Crew loves it! Plus I feel good about knowing what he is eating as I want him to live a long and healthy life.
Homemade Dog Food Instructions
I start out by browning our meat in 1-2 TSP of olive oil. I use a cast iron pan, so you may need more olive oil depending on your pan. For one week’s worth of food, I cook 1-1 1/2 pounds of meat. You can use chicken, beef, or turkey. Right now, I have been using turkey since meat prices are incredibly high, and turkey is least expensive. I choose meat that is 85% lean and 15% fat.
After browning my meat, I whisk an egg and add it. Make sure your egg is cooked all the way through.
Then, I add in all of my vegetables. (Please make sure you ground up your cauliflower as dogs tend to have a hard time digesting large veggies!) I use about 3-4 oz of each; however, this is relatively flexible. Sometimes I add more cauliflower and carrots depending on what I have leftover from the batch before.
Add finely ground egg shell for calcium.
I cook my brown rice (1/2 c of brown rice and 1/2-1 c of water for 5-7 minutes) in the microwave while I am cooking the rest of the food or browning my meat. Once it is cooked, add it with everything else.
Mix everything well. Serve 1-1.5 c of homemade with 1 c kibble. I top with 1-2 tbsp of greek yogurt or bone broth.
